The local authority for the dynamic city of Manchester, the City Council employs over 7,000 members of staff across a wide range of different services and directorates.
Operating under Manchester City Council Corporate Services directorate, the Corporate Energy Team is responsible for managing the Council’s energy consumption, reducing carbon emissions and implementing energy efficiency measures across the council’s operational and associated estate. The team also oversees the energy management for a number of councils contracted on the Manchester City Council Energy Framework.
Great ambitions are on the horizon; Manchester City Council is set to become a zero-carbon organisation by 2038 – much earlier than the UK Government’s 2050 target.
The challenge
For an estate this extensive and diverse, day-to-day energy management while making continuous progress towards long-term reduction and efficiency goals is no small feat.
SystemsLink’s Energy Manager software is used daily to help power these objectives and reinforce informed decision-making, from metering data collection and storage to managing energy procurement contracts.
Energy Manager also plays a large role in the Council’s decarbonisation ambitions. The Corporate Energy Team uses the software to bolster their carbon reporting, streamline data collection and monitor, validate and target their progress towards their goals.
The solution
Energy Manager is a versatile software solution. For example, the scalable platform can be used to help reduce energy spend and consumption, simplify carbon reporting and navigate volatile energy markets.
For Manchester City Council, the solution supports all three: Besides monitoring their consumption, Energy Manager comes to its own at contract renewal points when the Council team uploads the price and unit details to standing charges to the software to inform their procurement decisions.
Moreover, the carbon data collected with the software informs decision-making across the Council: the Finance Team uses these insights to generate budgets and make comparisons to previous years.
The resolution
Realising short- and long-term ambitions alike across a large local authority estate is a real group effort, whether this means effective energy management or creating an accurate image of consumption to create actionable reduction targets.
As awareness about Energy Manager software grows, more organisations within the Council’s portfolio, such as schools, are requesting access through the Council’s web portal to encourage their own energy management.
Organisations, their requirements and aspirations evolve over time, and their energy management software should reflect this. We look forward to supporting Manchester City Council as they continue to realise their energy and sustainability ambitions.
