A distinctive and unique institution, Liverpool John Moores University is rooted in the Liverpool City Region but has a global presence.
The challenge
One person oversees energy matters for the University – there is a lot of ground to cover and limited time for energy management.
The University is in the process of decarbonising its operations, with ISO 50001 certification the latest landmark.
This is where Energy Manager comes in. SystemsLink’s software solution strengthens the University’s internal resource, allowing staff to focus on other priorities and streamlining energy management so any issues can be quickly pinpointed and resolved.
The solution
Making the University’s ambitions into reality involves a lot of work behind the scenes – which Energy Manager bolsters with accurate, detailed and immediately available data and streamlined data collection.
For example, SystemsLink can automate collecting your profile data from data collectors, suppliers and building energy management systems straight into your software – a function the University has found useful.
Nonetheless, using Energy Manager is a journey: You learn how to make the software work best for your organisation over time. Multifaceted and continuously updated, even long-term users discover new ways to make their lives easier.
The resolution
Since 2021/22, Liverpool John Moores University has reduced its operational gas consumption by 35% through the implementation of decarbonisation projects, optimising plant and equipment performance, and robustly monitoring consumption; issues and anomalies are swiftly identified, investigated and addressed
The Smart Spaces function – which sends out alerts to a designated site contact when wastage is detected – has bolstered these efforts. Ultimately, the University wants to move into electrification, away from gas usage.
The collaboration between Liverpool John Moores and SystemsLink demonstrates the combined impact of software capacity and conscientious energy management. The journey towards decarbonisation continues, along with their journey with SystemsLink.

“I inherited Energy Manager at my previous job and brought it with me to my current role: I pull the reports and data every Monday.
If there is a problem, I take these to my engineering team and I can present the issue with clear and concise data. Energy Manager gives me the power to do that and provide my internal stakeholders with the analytics they need to make informed decisions.”
