Vale of Glamorgan Council

Supporting a council in tracking their consumption and cost while pinpointing wastage.

Vale of Glamorgan Council

The governing body for one of the Principal Areas of Wales, the Vale of Glamorgan Council operates under the objective of delivering ‘the right services to the right people at the right time and at the right costs.’

The challenge

As local authorities provide essential services, their portfolios often consist of buildings of diverse ages and types from offices to schools to leisure centres – with different operating requirements for each building.

Solution

Over the past years, Systems Link’s Energy Manager software and adjacent portal have proven an invaluable resource, allowing the Council’s decarbonisation and energy team to track electricity, gas and water consumption and pinpoint wastage across the estate.

Over time the Vale of Glamorgan Council team has created several inbuilt reports to maximise the value of the software. This includes an out of hours report gas-report, where the template can be adjusted to reflect unusual consumption hours by site.

This report is then automatically sent out each month to showcase gas use, highlighting if this has likely been out of hours and the cost – allowing the relevant team to investigate any issues.

This is where a dynamic and customisable energy monitoring and targeting software comes to its own. Energy Manager software can support pinpointing unusual consumption, help save the public spend and cut off unnecessary energy use.

The results

Impactful utilities management is founded on accurate, timely and easily accessible data. This underlines the importance of internal collaboration.

The decarbonisation and energy team wants to make Energy Manager the go-to place for their colleagues across the Council to view and monitor their site’s data, encouraging everyone to have a login. This allows staff to pinpoint anything unusual straight away.

The uses of Energy Manager don’t end there, however. The information available from the software also supports the Council with their wider reporting, such as data collection for carbon footprint reporting to the Welsh Government.

Nothing is stagnant in the world of utilities. Circumstances change, portfolios grow and the surrounding reporting landscape develops – and software solutions must evolve to accommodate this.

Throughout our time-honoured collaboration, the SystemsLink team remain at hand to help ensure the Council’s software solution meets their needs – now and in the future.

“The software is like my right arm; I use it every day. People will ring me up and ask: ‘how much energy did we use last year, how much did it cost?’

I think they are thinking it will take me hours to work out but it’s just two buttons and I can give them the answer – it’s great.”
